Garden Maintenance Tips For Container Gardening

As property prices continue to skyrocket on the North Shore, many of us cannot afford the dream garden we’ve always wanted. However, even if you only have a courtyard or a balcony to work with, you still have the opportunity to create an incredible outdoor space through container gardening.

Here at Hort Culture, we are experts in all types of North Shore garden maintenance, and in this article, we’ll provide you with a few helpful tips for starting and maintaining your container garden.

Start Small

While it may be tempting to buy a new pot plant every time you leave the house, this can quickly end up in you becoming overwhelmed and not paying enough individual attention to your plants. It is far more rewarding to start small and see the fruits of your labour before buying more plants.

Get To Know Each Of Your Plants

Each different plant species has very specific needs. Take the time needed to research the species you are bringing into your home and whether they are good candidates for containers.

Ensure Your Containers Have Drainage Holes

While it may look very cute to plant flowers in teapots and other ‘unusual’ containers, you should always make sure that these containers have drainage holes before you plant anything in them. Without a drainage system, your plants could ‘drown’ and suffer from root rot.

Water Frequently

If your container garden is under an overhang or indoors, then you need to remember to water your plants frequently as they won’t receive the rain that outdoor plants do. It may take some time to get the watering schedule right, so be patient.

Keep Warm During Winter

Ceramic and terracotta plants can crack if left outside during winter. Although the North Shore doesn’t experience exceptionally cold weather, you may want to bring your plants indoors if the minimum is reaching near-freezing conditions.

Repotting

When repotting plants, you want to ensure that you give them the right size pot. It is better to choose something a little too big so that the plant has space to grow instead of something too small that will stifle it.
